Annotated Games: Version 2.92, 4 players

This game was played during the game testing of Politeia. The players pursued different paths towards the victory.

  1. Athens (purple): Balanced strategy, allocating citizens all over the board
  2. Sparta (red): Aggressive strategy, using citizens for wars and conquests
  3. Korinth (green): Peaceful strategy, focusing on colonies and defence
  4. Thebes (blue): Tactical gameplay, going for cheap actions
  5. Argos (orange): Neutral, plays with 1 citizen in each city.

The action board is coded with black numbers for the number of neutral action discs with colored numbers if any of them is a player action disc. The player table shows talents, citizens, talents in stock, citizens removed and hand (resources and buildings). Actions are written with parantheses around actions not taken (i.e. the actions from which action discs are taken and any actions where action discs are dropped without any action taken).

Athens starts with the Take Hellas action and takes 1 disc and 1 grain for Athens. She hopes to lay the foundation for a strong economy. Sparta prefers Trade to exchange her starting grain and pottery for 3 discs and get "cash" for future campaigns. Korinth places a disc in Massalia to get access to more resources while Thebes gets another wine for Massalia with the Take Megale Hellas action.

Athens combines the Take Ionia and Battle actions by first battling the Persian in Miletos and then Take 3 discs for the 1st disc in Miletos and 2nd disc in Ephesos. Sparta wanted the Battle action but bides her time with the Take Hellas and Take Ionia actions, earning her 2 discs and 1 grain.

Korinth takes advantage of the now vacated Trade action to first trade her 1 marble and 1 grain for 3 discs and then proceed with the Take Hellas action to get 1 disc and 1 grain for Korinth. Thebes follows in Korinth's tracks and trades 1 wine and 1 grain for 3 discs and then places 4 discs in Megale Hellas; Syracuse, Emporion, Neapolis and Cyrene.

Athens chooses income actions for this turn with Take Megale Hellas, Take Hellas and Trade. This earns her 1 iron for Emporion and 1 grain and 1 disc for Athens and another 3 discs traded for the iron and the grain. Sparta finally gets to battle with the actions Battle, Place Ionia and Take Ionia. She battles Ephesos and Salamis, removing 2 Persians to Hades. Then she places discs in Byzantion and Trapezos and takes 5 discs for; 2 discs each for the newly conquered cities and and 5th disc for her 2nd disc in Miletos.

Korinth follows her example but focuses on Megale Hellas. The actions Take Ionia (1 disc for Trapezos) and Battle (against Emporion and Cyrene, removing 1 Athenian and 1 Spartan to Hades) triggers a war before her third Take Megale Hellas action.

The Persians attack Korinth (Korinthian), Thebes (Theban), Ephesos (Spartan), Miletos (Athenian) and Salamis (Spartan). The Athenian and the Spartan in Hades return to the players' hands. The non-player Argonaut in Salamis moves to the top and removes the Persian there to Hades.

After the war, Korinth proceeded to take 1 wine, 1 iron, 1 marble and 1 pottery for her four cities in Megale Hellas. Thebes then completed the turn by sacrificing 1 wine for 1 disc to Elysion. She also moved 1 Persian from Hades there to delay the next war.

Then she sacrifices her iron to place 1 disc in Elysion and also move 1 Persian there. Sparta uses Intrigue and Place Hellas to spend her many discs. She intrigues in Salamis and Cyrene, removing the Argonaut and Korinthian there to Hades, and places in Argos, Korinth, Thebes and Athens.

Korinth chooses to trade 1 grain and 1 disc for the missing oil in her set of five unique resources and then places discs Syracuse and Cyrene. Thebes prepares for the next round with Take Hellas, Trade and Take Megale Hellas. She has nothing to take in Hellas but wine, oil and marble in Megale Hellas, which she trades for 6 discs.

Korinth takes only the Sacrifice actions, sacrificing 4 of her 5 resources for 4 discs to Elysion. She also moves 2 Persians from Hades to Elysion and returns 2 Spartans from Hades to the supply to decrease the risk of war. Thebes battles Sparta in her starting city and remove her to Hades.

Athens makes a big move with Sacrifice, Grow, Place Hellas and Place Ionia. She sacrifices none and instead focuses on expansion by placing in Trapezos, Salamis, Korinth and Thebes and growing in Sparta and Thebes. Sparta has only one action this turn and grows in Korinth.

Korinth builds up a new resource base with Take Ionia, Battle, Take Megale Hellas and Trade. She takes 1 disc, battles the Persian in Emporion and takes iron, marble and wine. Finally, Thebes sacrifices wine and pottery, skips placing in Megale Hellas since she has so much there already and revolts in Byzantine, Thebes, Neapolis, Syracuse, Emporion and Massalia. Naturally, this triggers a war.

Korinth chooses Trade, Place Megale Hellas and Sacrifice. She trades nothing, places in Emporion, Massalia and Neapolis and sacrifices all her four resources to place 4 discs in Elysion and remove all 3 Persians from Hades. Thebes completes the 9th round with Trade, Take Megale Hellas and Battle. She takes marble, oil, pottery and wine, trades nothing and battles in Byzantion, Miletos and Thebes, removing 3 Persians to Hades.

Athens realizes that the game will end any time and makes a final push with Take Hellas, Sacrifice, Grow and Intrigue. She takes 1 grain and 1 disc for Athens, sacrifices nothing, intrigues in Byzantion, removing a Theban to Hades, and finally pays 4 grain to grow in Syracuse, Salamis, Neapolis and Cyrene. This means that Athens passes Sparta with 43 VP vs 42 VP (8x3 + 6x2 + 7x1 = 43 vs 10x3 + 1x2 + 10x1 = 42). Sparta would like to prolong the game but without any discs she cannot increase her score so she must reluctantly take 2 discs for her Ionian and deplete her supply. (She cannot choose to take less.)

The game ends with the following score:

  1. Athens: 8x3 + 6x2 + 7x1 = 43
  2. Sparta: 10x3 + 1x2 + 10x1 = 42
  3. Korinth: 9x3 + 0x2 + 6x1 + 1 = 33
  4. Thebes: 7x3 + 3x2 + 3x1 = 30

It's a bitter end for Sparta, who had the most discs in Elysion, but also for Thebes, who had four resources to sacrifice for 12 VP and probably enough actions to get some more VP.
