Annotated Games: 4 players

This game was played during the game testing of Politeia. The players pursued different paths towards the victory.

  1. Athens (purple): Balanced strategy, allocating citizens all over the board
  2. Sparta (red): Aggressive strategy, using citizens for wars and conquests
  3. Thebes (blue): Peaceful strategy, focusing on colonies and defence
  4. Korinth (green): Tactical gameplay, going for cheap actions

The action board is coded with black numbers for the number of neutral action markers with colored numbers if any of them is a player action marker. The political and geographical boards are coded with colored numbers for the citizens placed there and the resource board lists the face up resources. Finally, the player table shows talents, citizens, talents in stock, citizens removed and hand (resources and buildings). Actions are written with parantheses around actions not taken (i.e. the actions from which action markers are taken and any actions where action markers are dropped without any action taken).

Thebes51160Import+1
Korinth45130Grain, Metal, Oil

Athens starts with the action (Trade)->Produce1->Mobilize1 and gets first 1 talent and 1 resource (Wine) for Athens and then gets to turn 1 talent into 1 citizen in Athens. The action cost of 2 talents is covered by the turn income and the production income of 1 talent each. Sparta goes for (Produce)->(Mobilize2)->Intrigue1->Influence1-> Maneuver1 to first attack Ephesus and then support the city-state with an intriguing citizen. With Persian influence, she also prepares attacking players. Thebes is more peaceful and uses (Intrigue)->Colonize1->(Attack1)->Build1, skipping the Attack action but getting a colony, the Import building and a good action position for importing next turn. Korinth takes advantage of 2 free actions with (Attack)->Import1->Produce0->Trade0, giving her a net of 3 resources.

Korinth45130Grain, Metal, Oil

Athens takes the expensive actions (Mobilize)->Produce1->Import2 to get 2 more resources and 3 action markers in the next turn. Sparta aims for her 2nd Ionian city-state while also cashing in for her 1st with (Maneuver)->Intrigue0-Tax1. Thebes had expected to import this turn but with 3 action markers there, she decides to claim a 3rd colony with (Build)->Maneuver0->Intrigue1, moving the intriguing citizen to a colony. With plenty of talents, Korinth also decides to "invest" in 3 actions next turn while also getting another resource with (Trade)->Produce2.

Athens53131Grain, Grain, Wine, Pottery, Wine
Sparta43132
Thebes61160Import+1
Korinth52141Grain, Metal, Oil, Wine

Athens finds a great opportunity with (Import)->Mobilize0->Trade0->(Produce3)->Import0, not only keeping the talent at the start of the turn but also getting 2 resources (1 imported and 1 traded), completing a set of 5 unique resources! Sparta is worried about Athen's strength and consolidates her forces with (Tax)->(Intrigue)->Maneuver1->Attack0, moving her colonial citizen to Sparta and attacking Erythrae. This also triggers a Greco-Persian War (with both political levels positive) and with 2 Ionian city-states, Sparta earns most with 2 talents against 1 for Athens and Korinth. Thebes is blocked by Athens from Import and responds by blocking Export with (Intrigue)->(Mobilize1)->(Export1), saving her talent. Korinth uses her 3 actions to (Produce)->Trade1->Intrigue0->Mobilize2, getting a resource and challenging Sparta in Ephesus while also setting herself up for 3 actions next turn as well.

Thebes61150Oil, Pottery, Metal, Import+1, Colonize+1
Korinth4882(Grain), (Metal), (Oil), (Wine), Metal, Produce+1

Blocked from the Export action, Athens chooses (Import)->Produce0 for free. Sparta heads for the Tax action with (Attack)->(Export)->(Mobilize)->Intrigue(1) and also removes the potential Korinthian threat in Ephesus. Thebes can finally import and besides 3 resources get another Colonize+1 with (Export)->Import0->Build0. Korinth finds the tactical trick (Mobilize)->Import1->(Build)->Attack1->Export0, attacking Phocaea and completing a set of 4 unique resources and earning 7 talents (2 each for Wine, Metal and Grain, 1 each Oil) while still blocking Athens from exporting.

Athens has no immediate need of talents and focuses on getting citizens with (Produce)->Mobilize(0). Sparta increases her influence, this time with a defensive purpose, with (Intrigue)->Tax0->Influence2. Thebes has run out of talents and chooses (Build)->(Export)->Produce1. Korinth can no longer block Export and chooses (Export)->Intrigue0 to strengthen her citizen presence.

Finally Athens gets to exchange 3 resources for 4 talents (2 for Grain, 1 each for Wine and Pottery) with (Mobilize)->Export0. Sparta decides to trigger another Greco-Persian War after first cashing in on her Ionian city-states with (Influence)->Tax1->Mobilize0->Build0, after first strengthening her Ionian city-states. Again, the war is won by Greece since both political levels are positive. Sparta loses two more citizens but keep the city-states and the lost citizens still count in the end game score and she gets talents in return so she's happy. Thebes finally imports with (Produce)->Import2, while Korinth joins the influence race with (Intrigue)->Influence0.

Korinth5863Produce+1, Metal

Athens starts turning talents into citizens with (Export)->Mobilize1. Sparta stretched her resources last turn and can only choose (Build)->(Maneuver2) to get more actions the next turn. Thebes doesn't have that problem and finds the strong and cheap actions (Import)->Export0->(Mobilize)->Intrigue0->(Influence)->Colonize2, selling 4 resources for 7 talents (2 each for Oil, Pottery and Metal, 1 for Grain) and getting 4 new resources while at the same time intriguing control over Erythrae. Korinth challenges Thebes' strong presence with (Influence)->Intrigue1, placing a citizen in Erythrae.

Athens is falling behind and launches an attack against the now weak Sparta with (Mobilize)->(Intrigue)->Influence0->(Colonize)->Attack1. Sparta responds with (Maneuver)->(Attack)->Build0->(Export1)->Mobilize0, challenging Thebes building dominance with Intrigue+1 and strengthening her last city-state Ephesus. Thebes can now make a strong sequence of actions with (Colonize)->(Attack)->Build1->Import0->Export2, depleting 4 of the 5 resources before selling them for 8 talents and taking back the building initiative with Export+1. Korinth does what she can with (Intrigue)->Influence1->Colonize0 to remove 1 Theban colonist but will it be enough?

Korinth6673Produce+1, Metal

Athens continues to turn talents into citizens with (Attack)->(Colonize)->Intrigue0->Influence2, intriguing in Thebes and increasing her Persian influence, both actions aiming at a Theban attack the next round. Sparta takes advantage of her Intrigue+1 building with (Mobilize)->(Intrigue1), aiming for a second city-state in Phocaea. Thebes has all the talents she needs and chooses (Export)->Maneuver0->Attack0->Export0 to to reinforce her postion by moving 1 citizen from Cyme to Thebes and then attack and conquer Miletus. She also gets to sell another 4 resources, depleting her stock and ending the game!

The final score is as follows:

  1. Thebes: 3 Archegos circles+6 citizens+2 removed+4 building bonus=14 points
  2. Sparta: 1 Archegos circle+3 citizens+7 removed+2 building bonus+2 influence=14 points
  3. Athens: 3 Archegos circles+6 citizens+3 removed+2 influence=14 points
  4. Korinth: 2 Archegos circles+6 citizens+3 removed+2 influence=13 points

Thebes wins the tie break thanks to having the most talents!

The test game turned out to be tight and balanced. Thebes economic strategy won thanks to the strong sequence of actions round 7-8 followed by a well timed military action and end game triggering. Still, a tie-breaker was required to award Thebes the victory. Politeia is now solid and ready to enter external testing.
