Annotated Games: 4 players

This game was played during the game testing of Politeia. The players pursued different paths towards the victory.

  1. Athens (purple): Balanced strategy, allocating citizens all over the board
  2. Sparta (red): Aggressive strategy, using citizens for wars and conquests
  3. Thebes (blue): Peaceful strategy, focusing on colonies and defence
  4. Korinth (green): Tactical gameplay, going for cheap actions

The action board is coded with black numbers for the number of neutral action markers with colored numbers if any of them is a player action marker. The political and geographical boards are coded with colored numbers for the citizens placed there and the resource board lists the face up resources. Finally, the player table shows talents, citizens, talents in stock, citizens removed and hand (resources and buildings). Actions are written with parantheses around actions not taken (i.e. the actions from which action markers are taken and any actions where action markers are dropped without any action taken).

Athens54130Grain
Sparta (War)43141
Thebes44140Import+1
Korinth47110Metal, Pottery

Athens starts with (Trade)-Produce1-Mobilize1, earning her 1 talent, 1 grain card and 1 more citizen in Athens. Sparta aims for an early Tax action with (Tax)-Revolt1-Intrigue1 to place 1 citizen in Ephesus, revolts and removes 1 Spartan and 1 Persian and taking over the polis with the remaining Spartan. Thebes chooses (Produce)-Import1(0)-Export1-Build1 to take the Import building and immediately use it for a cheaper Import action. She chooses to sell the exported Pottery immediately to finance future buildings. Korinth finds free actions with (Export)-Produce0-Trade0-(Tax0), producing 1 grain and immediately trading it for 1 metal and 1 pottery. The tax action is chosen without executing it only to make it more expensive for Sparta.

Sparta (War)60161
Thebes30190Import+1, Pottery
Korinth56110Metal, Pottery

Athens goes for (Mobilize)-Produce1-Import0 and gets 1 talent as well as 1 grain card and 1 wine card to finance the next few turns. Sparta gambles a bit with (Revolt)-Attack1-Colonize1, taking advantage of the low Persian strength (military -2, politics +3) to attack with Erythrae with higher strength and colonizing the scarce resource colony of Emporion (metal). Sparta now has a good but thin presence in Greece and no talents left. The politics marker is also pushed down to +2, bringing a Persian war closer. Thebes is more careful with (Build)-Import1(0)-(Export2), not executing the expensive Export action but setting her up for 3 actions next turn. With a 2nd Pottery card, she should be in a good position to invest. Korinth continues her cheap strategy with (Tax)-Mobilize, growing strong in both talents and citizens, but is she too slow?

Athens (War)52141Grain, Wine, Metal
Sparta41143
Thebes33160Import+1, Export+1, Pottery
Korinth44131Build+1, Metal, Metal, Pottery

Athens decides to (Import)-Mobilize1-Trade1, trading 1 of her grain cards for 1 wine card and 1 metal card but also bringing the military level to +1 (9 archegos-8 Persians). Since the political level is also positive (+2), a Graeco-Persian war breaks out. Athens and Korinth both lose 1 citizen in their Hellas polises but defeat the Persians thanks to having more than 1 citizen there. Sparta on the other hand has only 1 citizen in each of her 2 Ionian polises and lose both of them. All of them are rewarded with 1 talent per lost citizen but Sparta would rather have kept her polises and earned taxes for them. Instead, Sparta goes for (Colonize)-Influence1-(Intrigue2), hoping that Greek influence will help her in future attacks but will she be able to afford them with only 1 talent? Thebes manage to take free actions through (Export)-Import0-Build0-Export0. She uses them to acquire a 2nd building card (Export+1) and a 2nd pottery card which can be immediately sold for the maximum price of 3 talents (since all 3 pottery cards are away from the board). Korinth also enters the building race through (Mobilize)-Import1-Build1, acquiring her 1st building card, Build+1, and acquiring a 2nd metal card. With all metal cards gone, the next round will see yet another struggle for the best resource deals.

Sparta41143Pottery
Thebes44140Import+1, Export+1, Pottery
Korinth (War)34132Build+1, Metal, Metal, Pottery

Athens successfully exports her metal for the maximum price of 3 talents and also adds another archegos citizen to the board through (Trade)-Mobilize1-Export1. Sparta decides to adopt the trading strategy with (Intrigue)-Trade0-Produce2-Export2, allowing her to execute an expensive but profitable action sequence where Produce gives her 1 talent and 1 grain, Trade lets her trade the grain for 1 metal and 1 pottery and Export to exchange the metal for 3 talents. Thebes finds herself with only 1 action available and goes for (Export)-Mobilize1 to get 1 more archegos citizen to the board. Korinth finds the free actions (Build)-Revolt0-Intrigue0, allowing her to add a demos citizen and immediately revolt in Phocaea. This removes 1 of her citizens together with the Persian citizen and lets her 2nd citizen take over the archegos circle. This also break the peace and bring the politics level back to +2. With the military level now at 0, another Graeco-Persian War is getting closer.

Korinth (War)45112Build+1, Metal, Metal, Pottery

The fifth round is quiet as all players are short of actions. Athens joins the build race with (Export)-Build0, building the Trade building and paying with 1 grain. Sparta has no better option but to pass to earn 1 talent. Thebes gets both her discounted actions with (Mobilize)-Export0-Import1 and exports her pottery for the maximum 3 talents only to immediately import it again. Korinth get a quick return for her newly acquired Ionian polis with (Intrigue)-Tax0, earning her 2 talents. The full round of peace brings the political level to +3.

Korinth35113Build+1, Metal, Metal, Pottery

Athens decides to attack with (Build)-Attack2 and conquer Ephesus with 1 citizen (thanks to the military+political level being 0+2), expecting to profit from the next war. Sparta sees no better option but to trigger the war with (Export)-Mobilize0-Intrigue0 to get more citizens to the table. With the positive military+political level, the war is again won by Greece, earning 2 talents to Athens (but losing Ephesus to Persia), 1 talent to Thebes and 1 talent to Korinth (but losing Phocaea to Persia). Thebes finally gets an opportunity to expand her colonies with (Import)-Build0-(Revolt)-Colonize0, upgrading her Export building to a monument and kicking out Korinth from the metal colony of Emporion. Korinth mobilizes with (Tax)-Mobilize1 to increase her presence on the board and perhaps get a revenge on Thebes in the future.

Korinth37113Build+1, Metal, Metal

Athens sees a good opportunity to get money for a 2nd building with (Attack)-Export0-Import0-Build1 to import and export wine for 2 talents and build Produce+1. The idea is not only to get cheaper Produce but also to take advantage of the many action markers there. Sparta once more finds herself short of talents and passes to get 1 talent. Thebes plays safe with (Colonize)-Intrigue to get 1 more citizen to Thebes. Korinth cashes in 3 talents on her pottery and attacks Phocaea.
