The kingdom of Sweden is weak and surrounded by enemies. The king and the nobility are entangled in strives, a war is raging with Russia, Denmark is entitled to huge war reparations and Poland claims the Swedish throne. At this critical moment, the leading men in the kingdom are turning their eyes towards the overseas trade and the rich harbors beyond for their salvation. They are turning their eyes towards the Baltic Sea.

Mare Balticum - the Fate of an Empire© is the sixth game in the Nova Suecia series. The players take on the roles of noble lines during the Swedish Empire Era. Together, they will populate the kingdom, build ships for overseas trade, build armies for overseas war and build forts for defending the gains. Instead of fighting each other, they will have to fight the enemies around the Baltic Sea, competing for the same provinces. However, the best for the kingdom is not necessarily the best for your noble line. You have to decide what benefits you most: production or trade, consolidation or expansion, war or peace. But will your objectives coincide with your opponents? Beware, if you fight internally, your external enemies will conquer the entire kingdom and put an end to both the Swedish Empire Era and the game!

"This game of Swedish nobility is not the sort of thing that would normally turn my head but because it’s in ‘Flux Capacity Publishing Challenge’ I decided to give it the same attention as all of the other entries and I’m really glad that I did. You will see for yourself that all of the assets are really detailed and authentic looking. From the heraldic symbols to the historical mapping everything suggests attention to detail and a designer with a real passion for their subject. The rules suggest a game that is quite nuanced with elements of competition and cooperation. I see this as a game that would be the focus of a gaming night and one that would benefit from being played again and again by the same group of friends who like to learn and counter each other’s strategies. I think Mare Balticum will appeal to history buffs and strategy geeks everywhere and I for one would love to get to know it better." (Fancy Squid Games)

"Overall, Mare Balticum offers a game play with limited resources and few choices at the time but where the impact is vast. The strategic considerations of cooperation vs competition, spending vs investment and peace vs war give innumerous strategic options and ensure a high degree of playability. Both traders and war mongers may find interesting paths across the Mare Balticum!" (Boardgamegeek)
