Systembolaget is a government-owned chain of stores in Sweden with an exclusive right of selling liquor. Its vision is a society where alcoholic beverages are enjoyed with consideration for the health so that nobody is injured. An important aspect of this is that all product selections and displays must be based on customer preferences, and every producer and distributor must be handled the same way.

The Shelf was inspired by the author's work at Systembolaget, particularly a practice week at a store. The idea was to provide a semi-cooperative experience of running a store together where an action of one player will open (or close) opportunities for the next player. The physical movements of items through the store provides both a tactile experience and a spatial challenge and the card management provide elements of both deck building and turn order manipulation. The result is a highly interactive and tactical game.

The game is currently undergoing development but you are welcome to return to this page for updates or follow Nova Suecia Games at @NovaSuecia.

My name is Nicholas Hjelmberg and I am a hobby gamer since childhood. Starting with classic games like chess and RISK, I moved on to explore "American" games like Diplomacy and Civilization and then "Euro games" like Settlers and Tigris & Euphrates. Combining my game experience with my history interest and IT and quality profession, I have entered the exciting world of board game design and production.
