The resource flow

To play Suecia, it is important to understand how resources flow in to and out from the city.

  1. Provinces are placed to the west of the city (basic provinces) and to the north of the city (advanced provinces).
  2. Farms are placed in province hexes. Farms in basic provinces supply basic resources and farms in advanced provinces supply advanced resources.
  3. Shops are placed in city squares together with city tiles. The northern and western resource symbols show which resources the shop demands from farms. The southern and eastern resource symbols show which resources the shop supplies to ship and ports.
  4. Ships are placed to the south of the city. The leftmost symbols show which resources the ship demands from shops. The rightmost symbols show which resources the ship supplies to its owner.
  5. Ports are placed to the east of the city. The leftmost symbols show which resources the ship demands from shops. The rightmost symbols show which resources the ship supplies to its owner.
  6. When farms produce resources, they are taken from the reserve and placed in shops. For each resource placed in a shop, the farm owner gets a similar resource from the reserve to the hand. The shop owner gets nothing for now.
  7. Basic shops demand only basic resources.
  8. Advanced shops demand both basic and advanced resources. If at any time such a shop has 2 different basic resources, they are immediately converted to 1 advanced resource.
  9. Ships demand basic resources. When ships sail to the city, resources are taken from the shops and placed on the ship. For each resource placed on a ship, the shop owner gets a similar resource from the reserve to the hand. Any surplus remains in the city. The ship owner converts 2 different basic resources to 1 advanced resource if possible and then takes all resources from the ship to the hand.
  10. Ports demand advanced resources. When ports are opened in the city, resources are taken from the shops and placed on the port. For each resource placed on a ship, the shop owner gets a similar resource from the reserve to the hand. Any surplus remains in the city. The port owner converts 2 different basic resources to victoryu points if possible and then takes all resources and victory points from the port to the hand.

City rows and columns

When a farm supplies resources, 1 row (for basic resources) or column (for advanced resources) is selected and only shops in this row or column are supplied.

  • If the supply exceeds the demand, the surplus may not be placed in any other shop.
  • If the demand exceeds the supply, the shops closest to the farm are supplied first.

Similarly, when a ship or a port demands resources, 1 column (for basic resources) or column (for advanced resources) is selected and only resources in shops in this column or row are demanded.

  • If the demand exceeds the supply, the shortage may not be taken from any other shop.
  • If the supply exceeds the demand, the shops closest to the ship or port are supplied first.

When selecting a row or column, the one with the highest demand or supply must be selected. In case of a tie, the first in clockwise order must be selected, as indicated by the arrows on the board.

Groups of buildings

  • >Normally, only 1 farm can produce in a turn. However, if adjacent farms are owned by the same player and produce the same resource, they count as 1 big farm and can all produce in a turn.
  • Normally, a shop only covers 1 row or column. However, if adjacent shops are owned by the same player and demands the same resource, they count as 1 big shop and covers several rows and/or columns.

The City castle

The city castle is not counted in any column or row, nor may any shops be placed there. However, if a farm supplies more than the demand, 1 resource may be placed on the city castle. (Return any previous resource to the reserve first.)

Similarly, if a ship or a port demands less than the supply, 1 resource may be taken from the city castle.
